NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A Manhattan road rage clash turned deadly Wednesday when one driver slashed the tires of another driver, who rammed him into a cafe window.

The fatal fight followed a minor fender-bender near 119 East 60th St. on the Upper East Side. Police responded to the scene at 5:15 p.m. and found a 54-year-old man dying on the sidewalk.

He was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital but couldn't be saved. Police identified him as Roberto Alvarez, of Franklin Square in Nassau County.

Andre Mosby, 26, of Manhattan, was taken into custody at the scene. He faces charges of manslaughter and assault.

Investigators believe Alvarez was headed westbound on E. 60th Street when Alvarez's 2020 Chevy Silverado pickup and Mosby's 2014 Volkswagen Jetta collided.

Police sources and witnesses told the Daily News that Mosby was trying to merge and Alvarez wouldn't let him into the lane. That led to what one police source described as a minor “love tap” between the two vehicles.

During the ensuing argument, Alvarez got out of his truck, took out a knife and slashed the tires of the Volkswagen, police said.

After his tires were slashed, Mosby "accelerated rapidly" into Alvarez, pinning him against the front window of the cafe and driving through it, according to police.

Some witnesses said a woman and several young children were in Mosby's car at the time and that it appeared he was acting in self-defense as the chaos unfolded.

"What would you expect?" one woman told WABC-TV. "What would be your reaction if you had your family inside of the car? He was blocking the other car to move and get out from the parking spot where he was."
