The shooting took place near the intersection of Pitkin Avenue and Legion Street around 4:30 p.m., according to police.

A uniformed detective was driving with an officer in a marked police car westbound on Pitkin Avenue, officials said.

Authorities believe the shooter fired at a white car driving northbound on Legion Street, but he missed and hit the NYPD vehicle instead.

The bullet shattered the window on the left side of the car and left an indent on the right side glass, injuring the driver in the process.

The officers exited their vehicle to pursue the shooter, but they lost track of him in a courtyard behind an apartment building on Legion Street, according to authorities.

Police later recovered a 9mm handgun in that same courtyard.

The injured detective was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County in stable condition.

“This person who came out the building had no regard for any of the innocent people in this community,” said Mayor Eric Adams at a press conference following the shooting. “We thank god these officers will be going home tonight, and we’re going to do everything possible to find the person who is guilty of this shooting and continue our pursuit to rid our streets of guns.”
