NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A subway rider handed over his wallet to a robber on a Queens train only to be shot and injured by the ruthless crook, police said Friday.

The NYPD released an image of the man they're searching for in Sunday night's vicious robbery in Rockaway Park.

The 36-year-old victim was on a Rockaway Park Shuttle train going from the Beach 105th Street station to the Beach 116th Street station at 9 p.m. when he was held up by a man with a gun.

The man pistol-whipped the victim while demanding his valuables, police said.

The victim handed over his wallet containing $120 cash and various ID cards.

Despite getting the wallet, the thief opened fire on the victim, striking him in the upper right leg, before fleeing at the 116th Street stop, police said.

EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
