Leaders from Minnesota's 11 tribal nations are at the State Capitol today... taking part in Sovereignty Day.
Seventh-generation Mdewakanton-Dakota Chief Leonard Wabasha led the prayer on the House floor.
“Today, I ask you for your blessings for health and for life and for help that we may all get along together in a good way,” Wabasha said in his dedication.
The day is meant for members of the Native American Community to educate lawmakers on their history, culture, and the relationship between federal, state and tribal law.
“I also ask you for knowledge, understanding and wisdom,” said Wabasha.
Minnesota held its first Sovereignty Day in 2019. The Day is meant for members of Minnesota's Native American tribes to educate lawmakers on their history, culture and the relationship between federal, state and tribal law.
