Heavy snowfall brings a new problem for cities: Where do they put it all?

Even Minneapolis's top director in charge of plowing says it's a lot snow.

“Four years ago when I was at the city of Plymouth, in April we had about an 18 inch snowfall,” says Director of Transportation, street maintenance and repair Joe Paumen. “But I don't ever remember this volume of snow this early in the year. The city of Minneapolis usually has four to five snow emergencies per season. And we are now already on number four. “

Paumen says the three day snow emergency is going about as well as can be expected with this kind of volume.

So where did the plows put it all?

“We have a couple of snow dump locations around the city where you know, we do have the room to pile it up,” Paumen explains. “We don't have a lot of space. But if necessary we can actually haul away from those locations as well.”

As of 12:00 a.m. Thursday the National Weather Service reported 14.9 inches of snow had fallen at MSP, with 15 inches at the NWS office in Chanhassen. Just a trace was recorded between midnight and 6:00 a.m. Thursday at MSP.

That brings our season total to an already impressive 48 inches, making it the third snowiest winter through January 4 on record (behind 1992 and 1984).

The highest snowfall amounts the last couple of days were primarily in the southwest metro with Savage, Chanhassen, Victoria and Mound seeing 15-16 inches of snow.
