A juvenile suspect was arrested Tuesday in connection to the killing of 10-year-old Lily Peters.
Peters was found dead Monday morning after visiting her aunt’s house in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
“The suspect was not a stranger. The suspect was known to the victim,” Chippewa Falls Police Chief Matthew Kelm said at a news conference Tuesday evening. .
Kelm declined to reveal details about the juvenile or their relationship to Peters. Kelm did say the suspect was arrested in the city limits.
“While nothing will bring Lily Peters back or change what happened, we are very grateful to deliver this news to the family and the community,” Kelm said.
Police do not believe there is any threat to the public.
Peters was reported missing about Sunday evening after not returning home after visiting her aunt. Police found her bike overnight, and then about 9:00 a.m. Monday morning discovered her body near a walking trail near the Leinenkugel's Brewery Parking lot.
Earlier on Tuesday, police also executed a search warrant at 422 N. Grove St., the home of Peters' aunt and the last place she was seen before she disappeared. The cause of death is still unknown and the investigation remains active. Kelm said the district attorney's office will decide what charges to file against the suspect.
