Another upper midwest law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty.
Officials say a county deputy in Wisconsin was shot and killed Saturday near Glenwood City.
According to a statement, St. Croix County deputy Kaitie Leising was responding to a report of a drunk driver in a ditch when shots were reported fired.
Leising died at a local hospital, her body brought to the Ramsey County coroner in St. Paul.
"This loss of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty is heartbreaking," said Josh Kaul, posting on social media. "My condolences to the deputy sheriff’s family and friends."
The person believed to be involved in the shooting, identified as 34-year-old Jeremiah Johnson, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to law enforcement.
Details released Sunday indicate Deputy Leising asked Johnson to take a sobriety test, and he responded by shooting her.
The shooting happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday.
In the last month, other shootings in Wisconsin and Minnesota has claimed the lives of three law enforcement officers.
On April 8 in Cameron, Wisc., Emily Breidenbach, 32, of the Chetek Police Department, and Hunter Scheel, 23, of the Cameron Police Department, were shot and killed during a traffic stop.
On April 15 in the western Minnesota town of Cyrus, Pope County sheriff Josh Owen died in a shootout.
In both of those incidents, the person believed to have shot the law enforcement officers was also killed.
