The Bruins have acquired the rights to defenseman Michael Callahan from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round pick, the team announced Tuesday night.

Callahan is a 22-year-old Franklin, Mass. native who is currently a senior at Providence College. He is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound left shot. The Coyotes drafted him in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft.

Callahan is in his third year as a captain of the Friars. He has three goals and 11 assists in 34 games this season, and has 13 goals and 53 assists in 134 games across his four college seasons.

Callahan could become a free agent this summer if he doesn't sign. The Coyotes likely traded him knowing he wasn't going to sign with them. Signing with the Bruins could obviously be more appealing since they're his hometown team.

The Friars have two regular-season games left this season, followed by the Hockey East tournament.
