Could Jaylen Brown's role on Celtics be causing supermax delay?

On the inaugural edition of Hart & Lyons, Andy Hart and Jon Lyons discussed how Jaylen Brown’s dragged out supermax contract negotiations could spark uncertainty regarding his long-term role on the Celtics.

There are currently six active players on the Designated Veteran Extension, known in layman’s terms as the supermax (not to be confused with the rookie max). Of those six players, four signed it on the first day it was available. Joel Embiid signed it on Day 12 and Giannis Antetokounmpo signed his on Day 25. There is precedent for more protracted negotiations, with Russell Westbrook taking the longest at 91 days. However, of the six current players, Brown has already held out longer than five of them.

This led Hart and Lyons to wonder if a question about Brown’s role in connection to Jayson Tatum has caused some of the delay. They listed off all six and discussed how their roles on their respective teams differed from Brown’s.

“Part of this is because the Celtics drafted well, which is great. But he (Brown) is the only one that we can look at that would be a one on a lot of teams in the NBA, but on his own team he is a two, and if they’re going to win a championship he’s going to be a two,” Lyons said.
