The Patriots made a major change to their lineup on Sunday afternoon against the Chargers in deciding to start quarterback Bailey Zappe over Mac Jones.

The switchup, unfortunately, didn’t do much to change their offensive output. New England didn’t score a single point in their 6-0 loss to LA, and were only able to muster up 257 total yards.

As for Zappe himself, though he didn’t turn the football over, the second-year signal caller completed just 13 of 25 pass attempts for 141 yards and was sacked five times.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke about Zappe’s performance during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show:

"Yeah, well I thought he did some good things," Belichick explained. "Obviously we didn't produce any points offensively, so that wasn’t good. That wasn't just him, that's everybody. We've just got to do a better job there. No turnovers at the quarterback position. There were some positive plays, just need to make more of them."

Following Sunday’s loss, Belichick was asked about by NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry about what went into benching Mac Jones, and he gave his first actual answer on the matter, saying that they "gave Mac the opportunity to work through his progression with the offense… we hadn't had a lot of production and I thought Bailey deserved a chance to play. So, he played."

The head coach was then asked on Monday what the main reason for Jones’ regression since his rookie season has been:

"I think, you know, there's another point in time to reflect [on that]... Right now really my focus is on getting the team ready to play against Pittsburgh. We’re looking at what happened yesterday and trying to learn from that. Just going to take it week to week here and worry about some of the bigger picture conversations at a different point in time. I don’t think that’s really relevant right now."

Belichick also spoke about wide receiver Tyquan Thornton’s big third quarter drop, Rex Ryan’s comments on the ‘Patriots Way’, and more on Monday’s edition of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. You can listen to the full interview here.
