6 rings: Wednesday stat day: the numbers from Patriots’ win vs. Jets suggest optimism along the offensive line
Just about every Wednesday morning during the season, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will open his press conference with a full rundown of their opponent in a given week.
This time, it was Mac Jones' turn. When speaking with the media on Wednesday, New England's quarterback went into detail about the defense they'll go up against this Sunday in the Dallas Cowboys. Here's the full transcript:
“Yeah, I think you’ve got to focus on everybody. He’s definitely the top player in the league, really. He's the best player we’ve gone against so far.
When you look at their defense as a whole I think, obviously, everybody’s really good, starting with Gilly [Stephon Gilmore]. Obviously he’s played a lot of football, does a great job at reading the quarterback. He’s very instinctive. [Malik] Hooker has great range in the back end. Had also played a lot of football. Played against him my rookie year. You look at [DaRon] Bland, who’s jumped out to corner, he’s a pretty good player. Young. But fast, strong, will come up and tackle. Played a lot of nickel. [Jayron] Kearse, another good player, tall, played against him my rookie year. Does a great job covering tight ends. Really impressed with him on film, and Donovan [Wilson] in the back end too. They’ve got a good secondary as well.
They’ve got good linebackers. Clark does a good job, I played against him in college at LSU, so I’ve been impressed with him. Obviously Leighton’s [Vander Esch] been there for a long time. Career Cowboy. Great player. Definitely lines up the defense and does all the things right. And then when you look at [Markquese] Bell they’ve kinda of switched him from safety down to linebacker. So they’ve got players that are kind of, doing a lot of different things and they can mix it up and that’s what I’ve been really impressed with.
And obviously it starts with the front with [DeMarcus] Lawrence, and Micah [Parsons], and on the inside they drafted Mazi [Smith], they’ve got some other guys, Osa’s [Odighizuwa] really good, was in my draft class, really impressed with him on film. But yeah, they look really good top to bottom, and Dan Quinn does a great job, obviously played against him my rookie year, he has a great system, he definitely believes in the rush, and I’m really just looking forward to go against a great defense, one of the top defenses that’s played a lot together too. Really looking forward to it.”
Jones also deflected questions about his incident with Sauce Gardner from last week, saying that he's "really focused on the Cowboys... That's my focus."
After that long answer about their defense, it sure sounds it.
