It wouldn’t be a 4th of July weekend without a good ole Patriots rumor, now would it?
The latest rumbling has to do with free agent running back Dalvin Cook who, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, has the Patriots intrigued by the idea of adding him to their offense:
“New England, they need a running back. They like to have two good backs. They’ve got Rhamondre Stevenson, they are atleast intruiged by Dalvin Cook.”
Tom E. Curran talks DeAndre Hopkins, Dalvin Cook:
This isn’t the first time Fowler has connected Cook to New England. The NFL insider suggested that the Patriots interest in wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins would in turn have them take a look at the four-time Pro Bowl running back:
“Let’s start with New England, because we know they have interest in DeAndre Hopkins,” Fowler said on ESPN. “I did text with a few teams around the league who said, ‘Hey, why wouldn’t they be interested in Dalvin Cook too? Because they need premium upgrades at the playmaker spot.’”
Adding Cook to a backfield that already includes a rising star in Rhamondre Stevenson would allow both backs to excel while also taking on less of a workload. However, with running back being arguably the most replaceable position in football, I wouldn't expect Belichick and the Patriots to overextend themselves for Cook's services. It would have to be for the right price.
