Ty law on christian gonzalez: 'We got us a cornerback'
“We got us a cornerback.”
It’s one of the first things former Patriots cornerback Ty Law said when he joined WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show on Tuesday morning following New England’s 24-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
He is, of course, talking about rookie Christian Gonzalez.
“I’m not going to anoint him just yet,” Law said when talking about the 2023 first-round pick, who he deemed one of the bright spots on the Patriots. “But he’s on the way to anointment… we not going to anoint him yet, but he’s on his way. I like what I’ve seen from Christian Gonzalez.”
Law later added, “when he gets anointed, we might have to put that #24 on him,” referring to the jersey number that he, Darrelle Revis, and Stephon Gilmore donned during their time in New England.
Through New England’s first two games of 2023, Gonzalez has 11 tackles, two pass breakups, a sack, and a highlight reel interception against Tua Tagovailoa while in coverage on All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Law spoke on the interception:
“Christian Gonzalez man, that dude. I look at the little things,” Law explained. “First of all he was competitive, he wasn’t afraid, and on the interception. You know what he did, Wiggy? He picked it off at it’s highest point. He didn’t sit there and wait for it to come down… he went up there and did it fundamentally correct. He did it at the highest point, giving himself a chance to make a play, and he did that. That is something during the game that a lot of people don’t do. And he’s doing that at such a young age and being competitive and running with guys. He’s not afraid and I like him.”
Law also spoke about the Patriots' struggles on offense, Mac Jones, their upcoming game against the Jets, and more on Tuesday’s edition of The Greg Hill Show. You can listen to the full interview here.
