Mike Lowell has trade deadline stories
Christian Arroyo has been the Red Sox' primary second baseman this season. That will not be the case going forward, because Boston designated him for assignment on Friday.
In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled Luis Urias, who was acquired from the Brewers on Tuesday, from Triple-A Worcester.
Arroyo was solid earlier this season, but has struggled over the last month-plus, hitting .209 with a .504 OPS in 23 games since June 25.
Urias has also struggled at the major-league level this season, hitting .145 with a .535 OPS in 20 games with Milwaukee. The Red Sox are obviously hoping that a change of scenery will help him get back to something resembling the player who had 23 home runs and 75 RBIs in 2021.
Urias will certainly be one of the options to play second base going forward, as will Justin Turner, Pablo Reyes and Yu Chang. Another roster spot will need to be freed up when Trevor Story returns from the injured list and takes over the shortstop job.
