Gio: 'I think you take it' if Yankees can go 8-8 over final 16 games before All-Star break

Thursday was the Yankees’ 75th game of the season, and their drubbing at the hands of the Mariners left them 41-34, 9.5 games out and in third place in the AL East and clinging by a half-game to one of the final two Wild Card spots.

Their final 16 games before the break are with Texas, Oakland, St. Louis, Baltimore, and the Cubs – so what can we expect for the final stretch?

“15-1,” Gio joked, although he wasn’t joking. “Can’t be messing around!”

Aaron Judge may or may not be back at some point in the next two weeks, as he “hopes to be doing something” by the end of the weekend, but it still “a couple of weeks away.”

“He may have turned the corner with the injury, but there’s no way he’ll be back,” Gio said.

Can the Yankees at least go 12-4 to alleviate some external pressure? Boomer isn’t sure, and all joking aside, Gio would like to see them do better than .500, but will take that if it comes.

“If they ended up just splitting these games, and were just hanging out where they are now, that would be fine,” Gio said. “Anything better you want, but if they go 8-8, I think you’re okay with it.”

“Seven games are against the Rangers and Orioles, so if you go 4-3 or 3-4 there, I get it – but the other teams? The Cubs, Cardinals, and A’s? Come on man,” Boomer said. “How about 8-1 there? And maybe 12-4 overall?”

“Without Aaron Judge, I just think that if you can tread water, you’re fine,” Gio replied. “One step at a time without your star.”
