Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills cleared some additional cap space ahead of the start of the 2024 league year on Wednesday with the release of running back and special teamer Nyheim Hines. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter originally reported the release on Sunday.
Hines was acquired by the Bills just before the 2022 NFL Trade Deadline from the Indianapolis Colts for running back Zack Moss and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
In his nine games played with the Bills in 2022, he was primarily used as a pass-catching back and kick returner, putting up 53 yards receiving on five catches and 53 touchdowns.
As a kick returner, Hines returned 19 kicks in 2022 for the Bills for an average of 29.2 yards per-return. This included a game in Week 18 of the season against the New England Patriots, where he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns less than a week after safety Damar Hamlin nearly died on the field in a matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Hines was set to return to the Bills for the 2023 season until a freak jet ski accident caused him to tear his ACL in his knee and miss the entire year.
By cutting the 27-year-old, the Bills would save $4.6 million on their salary cap with just $500,000 worth of dead cap money.
