MONROE COUNTY (WWJ) - Authorities in Monroe County celebrated the happy outcome of their first ever animal adoption event as dogs and cats went home with their new families over the weekend.
Sheriff Troy Goodnough called the Monroe County Animal Shelter's adoption fair a “huge success” during a time where animal rescue groups and shelters across Michigan and the country are facing overcrowded kennels.
Goodnnough thanked the contributions of the many sponsors and vendors present at the weekend's fair, as well as the shelter's volunteers.
Sponsors included Little Roses, FurryTale Dog Spa LLC., Hidden Intuition, Arbonne International, Monroe Pop Fest, Brainjerk Entertainment Company, Monroe County Reporters Ryan Mink / Shane Neckel and Lori Lambert Coldwell Banker Hanyes Reality.
"To have 22 animals adopted in one day is a testament to their tireless effort," the MCSO said.
Officials said the event raised nearly $1,500 which will go towards veterinary care at the shelter.
The adoption fair comes as many Michigan shelters join the BISSELL Pet Foundation in hosting low-cost or sponsored adoption events in an effort to place an influx of homeless animals with much-needed families.
Cathy Bissel, founder of the BISSELL Pet Foundation, told the Detroit Free Press that euthanasia rates of stray dogs skyrocketed 22% in the first quarter of 2022.
“Shelters are calling me daily and BISSELL Pet Foundation is feeling the burden of overcrowding," she added.
The foundation is hosting the longest-ever "Empty the Shelters" event running now through July 31.
Adopters will pay a maximum of $50 to adopt a dog or cat that is spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Participating shelters in the Metro area include:
• Detroit Dog Rescue (Warren)
• Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control (Detroit)
• Humane Society of Huron Valley (Ann Arbor)
• Macomb County Animal Control (Clinton Township)
• Macomb County Humane Society (Utica)
• Blue Water Area Humane Society (Clyde, MI)
• St. Clair County Animal Control (Port Huron)
