PONTIAC, Mich. (WWJ) -- Two men and a teenager are facing felony charges after a failed attempt at an armed robbery at an apartment in Pontiac last week, while a fourth suspect is still at-large.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says it all unfolded around 10 p.m. Friday at a woman’s apartment in the 100 block of Cherryhill when three men knocked on her door.
When the woman answered her door, one of the suspects -- identified as 23-year-old Jalyn Cowart of Pontiac -- pulled out a gun and pointed it at the woman, who quickly grabbed the gun. A struggle ensued, police said, before Cowart was able to wrestle the gun back, before the three suspects ran away.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were given a description of the vehicle the suspects were in and attempted to stop it. After a brief chase, the vehicle crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Cloverlawn and West Kennett in Pontiac.
That’s when four suspects hopped out of the car and ran in different directions. A sheriff’s K-9 unit was able to track three of the suspects, while a fourth got away.
Police also recovered the weapon at the scene.
Cowart and two other suspects -- 20-year-old Jessie Branch of Pontiac and 17-year-old Dresean Hopkins of Sterling Heights -- were arraigned Tuesday in 50th District Court in Pontiac on charges that carry up to life in prison, if convicted.
Hopkins, who authorities say as driving the vehicle the suspects fled in, is charged with armed robbery -- a life offense -- and fleeing and eluding -- a five-year felony. Judge Cynthia Walker set his bond at $10,000 cash/surety or 10%.
Branch and Cowart are each charged with one count each of armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon -- a five-year felony -- and possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony -- a two-year felony. Their bonds were set at $50,000 cash/surety.
All three suspects are set to appear back in court on Sept. 14 before Judge Michael Martinez.
Police have not released any further information about the fourth suspect.
