HURON TWP. (WWJ) -- Speeding is a suspected factor, according to police, in a deadly multi-vehicle crash Wednesday night in southern Wayne County.
The Huron Township Public Safety Department said the crash happened shortly before 10:15 p.m. at Sibley and Middlebelt Roads, near Detroit Metro Airport.
Three vehicles were involved, including two that crashed head-on, officials said.
Authorities said one car that burst into flames on impact. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene.
He's believed to be a 24-year old from Taylor. His name was not immediately released.
Aother driver suffered several broken bones and is hospitalized, police said, while the third driver had only minor injuries.
“Our thoughts and prayers certainly go out to family of the young person lost in this crash. It is an unfortunate reminder of the bad results that can happen when drivers exceed the speed limit, especially our young drivers. Through tragedy sometimes we are offered good reminders. This is a good time for parents to talk to their children about their driving habits, especially as it relates to speed," said Public Safety Director Everette Robbins, in a statement.
The Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.
“As always, I want to thank our first responders as well as the Accident Reconstruction Team for braving the elements last night to make sure this family will get the closure they deserve," Robbins added. "Every responder did all that they could to help the victims involved in this crash. Based on the circumstances of what occurred, we are very fortunate not to have had multiple fatalities.”
