WARREN (WWJ) -- Four people were arraigned on a number of felony charges Friday in connection with a shootout at a gas station in Warren, earlier this week.
Releasing more information about the incident, investigators said one of the suspects had nearly 100 pounds of marijuana, a large amount of cash and three guns with him when he met up with the others to make a drug deal.
Late in the afternoon of Tuesday, April 11, police said suspects in two vehicles — a white Chevy Blazer and black Mercedes — met up at the Marathon gas station on the corner of 13 Mile Rd. and Mound Rd.
It was a drug deal, police allege, that went south when one members of one group opened fire on the other.
According to police, surveillance video shows one occupant of the Chevy getting into the front passenger side of the Mercedes.
About a minute later, another occupant of the Chevy got into the Mercedes. Shortly after, two people got out of the car, carrying white bags, and got into the Chevy.
That's when police said gunfire then being exchanged between the Mercedes and the Chevy.
Both vehicles sped away, and three suspects were caught after crashing the Chevy into a Warren police car along 12 Mile Rd. near Mound.
The other driver was arrested on Wednesday, following an investigation that police said involved ten search warrants. At a home associated with that suspect, police found the large amount of marijuana and cash.
All four suspects faced a judge Friday afternoon, when they were each arraigned on multiple charges.
The three suspects in the Chevy face the most serious accusations:
-- Kevin Walton, 24 years old, of Redford, charged with armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm
-- Daquan Beasley, 31 years old, of Detroit, charged with armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
-- Shannon White, 29 years old, of Detroit, charged with armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, fleeing and eluding, felony firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
If convicted of armed robbery or conspiracy to commit armed robbery, the defendants face life in prison. Walton, Beasley and White all requested court-appointed counsel.
The fourth suspect also faces felony charges, but with a maximum sentence of seven years:
-- Matthew Kakos, 23 years old, of Sterling Heights, charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and felony firearm.
Walton and Beasley's bonds were set at $1.5 million, White's bond was set at $1 million, and Kakos's bond was set at $150,000. All four are prohibited from having or using firearms and will be required to wear a GPS tether should they make bail.
Police say several of the defendants have previous narcotics or weapons-related convictions.
In a Facebook post, Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer praised his department for arresting those responsible for violent crimes, touting the fact that all of the suspects were located and apprehended in less than 24 hours.
Dwyer also wanted to reassure the public that the shootout involved suspects who knew each other and was not a random act of violence.
