DETROIT (WWJ) -- After following and penning in a stolen Hyundai SUV, state and local police stopped the vehicle and took everyone inside into custody -- a large group, including one young woman and six teenagers.

Michigan State Police first encountered the car in question on westbound I-94 near Linwood around 9 p.m. Sunday evening.

Troopers say they ran the license plate on the Hyundai, and found that it had been reported missing from Southfield earlier in the day.

According to MSP, their officer followed the vehicle at a distance without the flashers on until other state troopers and Detroit police arrived to provide backup.

At that point, the cops conducted a traffic stop on southbound Southfield Freeway near W. Chicago, boxing the SUV in to limit the risk of a police chase.

Several occupants jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. The driver remained in the car, and MSP say all of them were eventually apprehended.

Police believe the driver was a 17-year-old girl. Passengers included a 20-year-old woman, 15- and 17-year old girls and 18-, 14- and 17-year-old boys.

A preliminary inspection of the Hyundai showed a punched ignition, which means the ignition lock had been broken with a screwdriver, allowing the car to be temporarily started driven without the key.

The juvenile suspects were held at the Wayne County Youth Home, and one adult was lodged at the Detroit Detention Center.

A prosecutor is set to review the incident for possible charges.
