BELLE ISLE (WWJ) -- A team of U.S. Coast Guard officers saved a scared pup who fell through the ice on the Detroit River Saturday afternoon.

A Facebook post from the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit announced the rescue mission, which started around 12:30 p.m. when a boat crew from the Belle Isle Sector saw the dog struggling in the water near Grayhaven Island, northeast of Belle Isle.

After some prep work, Petty Officer Cole Harper -- wearing waterproof gear and a long tether -- made his way across the ice to the capsized canine.

Once Harper had pulled the pup from the river, he laid flat on the ice, and the crew reeled them in.
