PITTSFIELD TWP (WWJ) -- A Washtenaw County elementary school sustained significant damage when a bus driver impaired by a sudden medical event crashed through one of the building's walls.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Sunday, Pittsfield Township Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of a crash involving a school bus at Harvest Elementary, located on Campus Parkway, west of State Street.

First responders arrived to find that a Saline Area School Bus had driven into what appears to be a front wall of the structure. Pictures posted to social media show more than half of the bus inside the building.

The driver -- a 69-year-old Saline man -- was the sole bus's sole rider. While driving, he was incapacitated by an unknown medical issue and crashed. He was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Officials determined the school was empty at the time of the accident, and there were no other injuries.

According to the Saline Area Schools Twitter account, the bus had been contracted for a private event and was not in use by Harvest Elementary when the crash occurred.

Harvest Elementary cancelled classes on Monday as school administrators surveyed the extensive damage to both the building and the bus.

Authorities have asked that community members stay away from the scene for safety purposes, promising that more information will be provided soon.
