(WWJ) An 18-year-old man who led police on a chase from Madison Heights to Royal Oak has died after crashing near the Detroit Zoo.
According to investigators, at around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Souhib Zokari drove away from Madison Heights police officers who tried to pull him over near 11 Mile Rd. and Campbell for driving without a license plate, and sped away again from officers in Royal Oak.
Police said the suspect vehicle continued westbound on 11 Mile Rd. at speeds in excess of 90 mph, attempting to evade officers, then turning onto Woodward Ave.
Zokari lost control of his car along southbound Woodward near I-696, crashing into a light pole.
Zokari had to be rescued from the car by Royal Oak firefighters using the jaws of life.
Found to be suffering from serious injuries, the young man was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he died a short time later.
No other injuries were reported.
