DETROIT (WWJ) -- The City of Detroit celebrated National Pot Day, or 420, by accepting applications for businesses within the marijuana industry.
Detroit has an unlimited number of licenses for marijuana growers, processors, transporters as well as safety compliance and event organizers; however, applications for stores are not being accepted yet.
The Detroit City Council approved the adult-use new marijuana ordinance 8-1 on April 5, which became effective on Wednesday.
The City Council will soon vote on when the licenses can be used.
“We are so excited to announce the opening of our adult-use marijuana licensing program. We are confident and proud of the space that we have carved out for social equity applicants to take part in this billion-dollar industry,” said Megan Moslimani, Director of Marijuana Ventures and Entrepreneurship, of the Civil Rights Inclusion and Opportunity Department.
The Office of Marijuana Ventures & Entrepreneurship will continue to update its website with information regarding retail licenses and when they will begin accepting applications.
