DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit has released a fleet of four electric buses that you may be able to ride as soon as Monday.

The Poterra buses are the first of their kind for the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT).

“DDOT is excited and proud to partner with Proterra to bring cleaner transit to Detroit,” said DDOT’s Executive Director of Transit C. Mikel Oglesby. “Detroiters deserve safe and sustainable transit, and we are happy to be at the forefront of this exciting technology.”

The buses are said to produce fewer emissions and use fewer parts than standard fossil fuel buses. They are also described as being very quiet and provide a smoother ride.

Electric buses will be assigned to routes based out of the Schoemaker Terminal on the city's east side where there's a charging station.

According to current research and development data, the (DDOT) said these battery-electric buses perform efficiently relying on rechargeable batteries, and do not emit any harmful tailpipe emissions or other greenhouse gasses.
