DETROIT (WWJ) - The Rocket Mortgage Classic takes place this Thursday. However, overnight Monday storms have put a stop to golfer practices while cleanup takes place.
The Detroit Golf Club was not spared when it came to heavy wind damage following Sunday evening into Monday morning thunderstorms. The Rocket Mortgage Classic location is closed Monday morning due to plenty of trees and branches on the course. WWJ's Charlie Langton went to check it out and said banners and signage were also down due to the severe weather.
Langton also witnessed the damage after a giant tree fell on top of a vehicle in the parking lot of the golf course. A crew was dealing with the cleanup Monday morning. Langton said the smashed Pontiac took up a lot of the spaces in the parking lot.
There are downed power lines in and near the Palmer Woods and Palmer Park neighborhoods, which surround the golf club.
Crews are in the process of cleaning up. We're told the course is okay and events will continue Tuesday, if not Monday afternoon. The golf club was expected to open at Noon Monday. The special events planned for Tuesday and Wednesday are also still taking place.
As of 7 a.m. Monday, the DTE outage map showed more than 75,000 homes and businesses without electricity following heavy winds and storms Sunday night into Monday morning.
