Mekhi Green of Detroit was identified following in a police investigation into the Jan. 7 shooting which led to his arrest, according to prosecutors. Green was charged as an adult with one count each of First-Degree Murder, Assault with Intent to Murder, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

“This case is a stark reminder of why there should always be options for prosecutors when the facts allege unspeakable premeditated violence by juveniles. The facts in this case warrant charging the defendant as an adult,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Authorities said Green was inside a gas station around 7:42 p.m. on the 11000 block of East Seven Mile Rd in Detroit when he saw the victim and his brother enter the store. Green then fired a gun and struck the victim in the buttocks. As Green attempted to fire a second time, his gun malfunctioned and he fled out of the store.

Green then reentered and found the 15-year-old victim injured on the floor. Police allege that Green shoot over the victim and fired his gun six more times at point-blank range, mortally injuring the teenager.

Detroit police officers, who were the first to dispatch to the gas station, found the teenage victim alive, but suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim passed and was pronounced dead by the time medics arrived on scene.

According to authorities, Green knew the 15-year-old victim and the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two that occurred over social media.

Green was arraigned on the charges Wednesday in 36th District Court. He was ordered held without bond, and remanded to jail.

He will be back in court for a probable cause conference scheduled for Feb. 15, followed by a preliminary exam set for Feb. 22.
