TAYLOR (WWJ) -- Two people have been charged in the shooting of a 4-year-old Downriver boy.

Police say that the young child was shot on Tuesday, May 3, at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the 15667 block of Court Village Lane in Taylor.

It's alleged that the uncle, Keaton Crowder, 28, was handling a shotgun when it accidentally fired and went through the floor. The gunshot struck the child and non-fatally wounded him.

The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment where it's alleged that the mother, Kiarra Christa Crowder, 30, and the uncle provided a false account of the incident during their first encounter with the police.

Police did not know about the shooting until they got a call from the hospital about the wounded boy at around 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 4.

Kiarra told investigators that her son was struck in a drive-by shooting at a bus stop on Joy and Evergreen roads in Detroit.

At a news conference Wednesday, Detroit Police Chief James said surveillance video could not confirm that anything at all happened at the bus stop. There were no casings on the scene, and no one in the area heard any shots.

While, thankfully, the boy is expected to make a full recovery, the chief called what happened "extremely troubling."

The two defendants were charged on Friday, May 6, said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Keaton was arraigned on one count of False Report of a Felony and one count of Careless Discharge Causing Injury.

Kiarra was charged with one count of False Report of a Felony.

Both of them were given a $15,000 cash bond.

Their probable cause conference is scheduled for May 16 at 1:30 p.m., and the preliminary examination is scheduled for May 23 at 2:30 p.m.
