DETROIT (WWJ) -- While investigating a disturbance call Friday night, Detroit police engaged in a shootout with an unidentified suspect, who was injured and arrested.

Michigan State Police were alerted to the altercation around 8:30 p.m. on Mar. 31, when the Homicide Task Force (HTF) was called out to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Detroit.

According to Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald of the Detroit Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance call near Puritan and San Juan St. As they searched the surrounding area they encountered a young man on San Juan.

DPD said that as the cops approached, this man pulled a weapon from his waistband and fired multiple rounds at the officers, striking their squad car.

Police returned fire, apparently striking the suspect, who sustained at least one gunshot wound, according to MSP.

Assistant Chief Fitzgerald said law enforcement set up a perimeter after the shootout and found the young man hiding in a nearby house.

Fitzgerald praised his officers for following their training while being shot at. "These officers... they're the bravest in the country," he said.

The Assistant Chief also said that the suspect was in custody and being treated for his injuries.

Because this was an officer-involved shooting, MSP was brought in to investigate.

State troopers closed off the area and redirected traffic while a K-9 unit swept the scene for evidence.

In a Saturday morning update, MSP said they had recovered a handgun and several other undisclosed items before officially clearing the site.

This is an open investigation, and MSP is expected to submit a report to the prosecutor's office.

No officers from either department were hurt during the shootout.
