DETROIT (WWJ) – The search continues for a group of young men suspected of opening fire on an off-duty Detroit police officer last week.
Authorities have renewed their pleas for tips in the case, releasing new surveillance video of the suspects at a gas station.
An off-duty officer was injured by shattered glass when the suspects fired two dozen or more shots as he sat in his car with his girlfriend around 3:15 a.m. last Monday on Fielding Street – near 7 Mile and Greenfield Roads on the city’s west side.
Video released last week shows the group of suspects, who appear to be teens or young men, firing shots, including one of them from on top of an SUV. At least six suspects are then seen fleeing the scene.
The officer was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released. His girlfriend was not injured.
A motive in the case remains unclear, and investigators said last week they were still working to determine if the off-duty officer was caught in the crossfire of a separate incident or if he may have been targeted.
On Wednesday Detroit police shared new images of the suspects and two vehicles they were riding in, seen on Project Green Light cameras at a BP gas station.
Authorities did not specify when or where the images were captured. The new images show two different SUVs – a gray one and a black one – and three suspects, including one wearing a gray sweatshirt, ripped jeans and a black face mask.
The other two suspects, one in a blue sweatshirt and one in a black sweatshirt, were seen pumping gas in the black SUV.
Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the suspects or knows something about the shooting to call Detroit police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
