Driver loses tire, hits median, is ejected on I-94 in Macomb County: police

(WWJ) A woman is in critical condition following a crash that shut down a freeway in Macomb County, during the Monday morning commute.

Witnesses told Michigan State Police that the driver, who had a child on board, was traveling along eastbound I-94 in the left lane east of Little Mack, at around 8 a.m., when a tire came off of her car.

"The driver tried to maintain control of the vehicle and was not able to," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw told WWJ's Sandra McNeill, "hitting the median and rolling over."

The driver, 28, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car, Shaw said.

The 7-year-old passenger in the car was belted and was not injured.

The woman was taken by EMS to a hospital for treatment of critical injuries. Early in the afternoon, she was undergoing surgery, Shaw said.

The child was placed in the care of relatives.

All eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed at Gratiot Ave. in Roseville for about three hours after the crash, with MSP troopers and other first responder on the scene.

The freeway reopened to traffic at around 12:20 p.m.

Shaw said the investigation is ongoing.
