Hit-and-run driver who killed young woman leaving work in Shelby Township still at large

(WWJ) One year later, investigators are still trying to find out who hit and killed a woman as she was leaving work in Shelby Township.

The crash happened at 10:20 p.m. on October 1, 2020, just after 21-year-old Mya Shaw finished her shift at the Burger King on 23 Mile and Schoenherr Road, according to Shelby Twp. Police.

Shaw was in the crosswalk as she tried to cross Schoenherr, and was hit by a southbound vehicle that did not stop at the scene.

Sgt. Mark Benedettieni said police believe the car was a white 2015-2020 Dodge Challenger.

"Right now we don't know the circumstances of why they fled the scene; we don't know if they were drinking, or they had warrants, or on a suspended license," Benedettieni said. "So that part we won't figure out until we catch up with the driver of the vehicle."

Over the past year, investigators have spoken with witnesses and followed leads that just haven't panned out, and it remains an open investigation.

"I know the family was devastated when this happened last year... her coworkers were devastated and it really hit the community hard, like I said," Benedettieni said. "So that's why we'd like to find the driver of this vehicle that struck and killed her."

Police are hoping someone in the public saw something or knows something that could help solve this cold case.
