DEARBORN (WWJ) – An Inkster man who hid out in a porta potty after robbing a bank in Dearborn last March has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison.
Charles Woolery, who has 14 prior felony convictions, was sentenced to 86 months in prison for robbing the Dearborn Federal Savings Bank, U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison announced Tuesday.
Woolery, 52, pleaded guilty to the bank robbery in August.
Federal authorities say Woolery walked into the bank wearing a black face mask on the afternoon of March 2 and handed a note to the teller and gestured to his hip as if he had a weapon.
The note instructed the teller to smile and put money in a bag or else he would “kill everyone,” according to Ison’s office.
The teller, fearing for her safety, placed $1,690 in cash in a black bag and handed it to Woolery, who then fled the scene on foot.
Dearborn police officers later found Woolery hiding out in a porta potty located in the parking lot of the nearby Hampton Inn on Michigan Avenue near the bank.
Officers found the $1,690 cash in the front pocket of the Detroit Lions hoodie he was wearing. Officers also recovered Woolery’s facemask and paper like that of the robbery note in the porta potty.
“Today’s sentence appropriately takes this defendant’s long criminal history into account,” Ison said, per a press release. “Our office stands ready to prosecute individuals who use violence or threats of violence to threaten our community.”
