DEARBORN (WWJ) – An Inkster man arrested while hiding in a porta potty after allegedly robbing a bank in Dearborn in March has pleaded guilty to federal charges that could land him in prison for up to 20 years.

U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison’s office says 52-year-old Charles Woolery admitted to robbing the Dearborn Federal Savings Bank on March 2.

Officials say Woolery walked into the bank that day wearing a black face mask and handed a note to the teller, then gestured to his hip as if he had a weapon.

The note demanded the woman behind the counter to “smile” and put money in a bag, or he would “kill everyone.”

The teller, fearing for her safety, placed $1,690 in cash in a black bag and handed it to Woolery, officials said.

Woolery then ran out of the bank.

Police found him a short time later hiding out in a port-a-john in the parking lot of the nearby Hampton Inn on Michigan Avenue

Officers found the $1,690 cash in the front pocket of the Detroit Lions hoodie Woolery was wearing at the time of the robbery. Officers also recovered Woolery’s face mask, full tan Carhartt style suit, and tan gloves like those used in the bank robbery in the port-a-john where Woolery was hiding.

“This case shows that violent criminals can run, but they can’t hide no matter where they may go,” Ison said, per a press release. “The federal authorities appreciate the assistance and partnership of the Dearborn Police Department.”

Woolery faces a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for bank robbery. He will learn his sentence on Dec. 19.
