
ROMULUS (WWJ) -- A man who allegedly drove recklessly, hitting and killing one woman and critically injuring another after a house party in western Wayne County has been charged with more than a half-a-dozen felony counts.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Wednesday announced the case against 43-year-old David Armando Palacios-Sanchez of Detroit, in connection with the incident in Sumpter Township the night of Sunday, May 28.
Just before 8:30 p.m., police said Palacios-Sanchez was speeding while leaving a house party in the 26880 block of Sumpter Rd. He lost control of his vehicle, police said, left the roadway and hit two women who were on foot.
Reyna Martinez-Hernandez, 49, of Rockford, Illinois, was pinned under the defendant's car and died at the scene.
A 36-year-old woman from Plainfield, New Jersey, was rushed to a hospital where she underwent surgery and survived.
Palacios-Sanchez fled the scene, police said, running into some nearby woods where he tried to hide.
Hours later, with help from a law enforcement drone, the suspect was found and taken into custody.
Palacios-Sanchez is charged with the following: one count of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, one count of Reckless Driving Causing Death, one count of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury, one count of Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Body Function, two counts of Failure to Stop at Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death, and one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance – Less than 25 Grams.
Palacios-Sanchez was arraigned Wednesday morning 34th District Court and given a $500,000 cash bond. His next scheduled court appearance, a probable cause conference, is set for June 14.
