(WWJ) A young Macomb County man who was kicked out of a sports bar and then shot the place up has been sentenced to minimum of nearly three years behind bars.

Charles Alam, 23, was 21 years old when he opened fire from his car at the at Hub Sports Bistro, on 21 Mile Rd. near Garfield in Macomb Township, back in the spring of 2020.

In a deal with prosecutors, Alam pleaded no contest to charges of discharge of a firearm at a building, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to court records obtained by the Macomb Daily.

On Sept. 23, Alam was sentenced by Macomb County Circuit Judge Michael Servitto to 34 months to 10 years in prison, receiving credit for 14 months time served in the county jail.

In exchanged for the plea, one count of firing at a building, two additional felony firearm counts and one count of malicious destruction of property were drooped.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, early in the morning of June 15, 2020, Alam threatened to "shoot up" Hub Sports Bistro after he was escorted out by security guards.

A short time later, investigators said security video showed Alam returning to the scene in his red Honda, and firing the first shot. He then drove away, officials said, but returned to the parking lot a second time to fire again.

A female staff member was walking out door when it happened, according to investigators, but was pulled back into the bar in time by another employee. A gun shot was heard just as the door was shut and a bullet was found in the door. Fortunately, no one was injured.

With help from a witness who described Alam to investigators, he was arrested a short time later.

As for a motive, the Macomb Daily reported that a defense attorney for Alam said his client had been beaten up at the bar before he was ejected.

The newspaper said Judge Servitto did not object to prison “boot camp” for Alam if he is deemed eligible.
