OTSEGO COUNTY (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man is facing charges after Michigan State Police found meth inside of a fake book during a traffic stop for allegedly harassing his ex-girlfriend.

The 33-year-old suspect, whose name has not yet been released, pending formal charges, was arrested last week for allegedly violating a personal protection order, felonious assault, and use of a police scanner during the commission of a felony, as well as possession of narcotics.

MSP officials say the charges stem from a traffic stop shortly before midnight on Friday, July 15 in Livingston Township – just north of Gaylord – after the suspect’s ex-girlfriend called the police.

Authorities say the woman had recently obtained a PPO against the suspect. She was getting off from work Friday night and asked a coworker to follow her home because she didn’t feel safe.

While the coworker and two of his friends followed her home, they noticed the suspect was following them.

When they got to her home, the suspect allegedly threatened the coworker with what he believed to be a handgun. The suspect fled the scene and the police were called.

Troopers tracked the suspect down a short time later and pulled him over.

Authorities say the suspect was using a police scanner app on his phone and had it connected to his car stereo.

During a search of the suspect’s car, troopers found a knife between the front seats that was used in the assault, as well as a false book, hollowed out with two rubber containers with suspected meth and a colored powder substance inside.

Troopers also found six needles, a scale and other items for narcotics use.

The suspect is being held at the Otsego County Jail, pending arraignment.
