DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police helicopter "Trooper 2" continues to make a name for itself after officers overhead helped troopers apprehend a Detroit man who fled a traffic stop Thursday.

According to MSP, around 8 p.m., Thursday, troopers from the Metro South Post attempted to pull over a car that had run a red light.

The driver of the vehicle -- identified as a 2012 Dodge Durango -- did not stop.

Aware that Trooper 2 was overhead, officers did not pursue the Durango, which they say took a long drive through the city.

Aerial footage from Trooper 2 shows the Durango driving recklessly, using the center turn lane to pass other vehicles. At one point, the driver pulls over a lawn and sidewalk to park behind a house in the 500 block of Holbrook.

Once the Durango was somewhat hidden behind the home, the suspect exited the vehicle, noticed Trooper 2 up above and got back in the SUV and drove off.

Later in the pursuit, MSP troopers were almost able to pin the driver down on the service drive for northbound Lodge near 7 Mile Rd, but the Durango cut through a KFC parking lot and headed east.

State police were finally able to intercept the suspect at the intersection of Trojan St. and Murray Hills St. At that time, the driver -- a 35-year-old Detroit man -- was arrested without further incident.

MSP Public Information Officer, First Lieutenant Mike Shaw expressed his concern that more suspects seem to be fleeing traffic stops.

"What they don't realize," Shaw said, "is that we can use aviation to still hold them accountable for their actions and not allow them to endanger the public."
