Family dog shot and killed during attempted car robbery in Ann Arbor, police say

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) A shooting during an attempted car robbery in Ann Arbor led to the death of a family's dog, police said.

Ann Arbor Police said the shooting happened on Weldon-- in the area of Scio Church Road and I-94-- on Sunday, December 7, around 4:05 a.m.

According to police; their preliminary investigation suggests a homeowner, with his dog following him, attempted to confront a man in his driveway who was breaking into his car.

The suspect pulled out a gun and shot the dog, killing it instantly; police said.

Authorities told WWJ the suspect then ran away from the scene and fired multiple shots. One of those shots entered a nearby home.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

The suspect is described as a man--dressed entirely in black-- with a black face covering. No other details were released.

Officers-- with the help of K9s and drones from the Northfield Township Police Department-- conducted an "extensive" search of the area. They could not find the suspect, police said.

"This was an extremely dangerous act that put members of our community at risk," Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson said. "We will use every available resource to find this suspect."
