DETROIT (WWJ) – Michigan State Police are investigating a pair of connected shootings on Detroit’s east side Monday evening, including one outside of St. John’s Hospital near Moross.
MSP officials say they got a call from a witness to a freeway shooting on eastbound I-94 near Chalmers late Monday afternoon and a short time later, a victim showed up at St. John’s Hospital, saying he had been shot in the ankle in that area.
The victim said a white sedan, later identified as a Chevy Impala, pulled alongside his car and began shooting. It was not clear what prompted the shots to be fired.
The victim pulled off to the shoulder and got out of the vehicle, allowing the passenger to drive him to the hospital.
When the victim had gone inside the hospital, a dark-colored SUV, since identified as a Chevy Equinox, pulled up to the hospital and began shooting at the victim’s parked car.
The victim’s father was near the vehicle at the time, and was also hit by gunfire in the ankle, according to MSP. Police officials also said the hospital building was damaged in the shooting.
After a few hours of investigating, MSP officials say they’ve determined the two incidents are connected, but it’s still not exactly clear what led to either shooting.
State police will be handling the investigation for both incidents, though Detroit police released photos of the two suspect vehicles believed to be involved in the shootings.
The Equinox appears to have heavy dent damage to the driver's side, while the white Chevy Impala has damage near the left tail light.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed either shooting or knows something about either incident to call 734-287-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
I-94 was shut down for more than three hours while police investigated the freeway shooting. It reopened around 9:30 p.m.
