(WWJ) One kayaker has died and another is missing at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

According to a release Friday by the National Parks Service, the pair was reported missing the evening of Thursday, Sept. 16, after setting off kayaking on Lake Superior.

Officers with the Park Service, along with other federal and state agencies, began search and rescue operations, with the help of a C130 aircraft and a rescue helicopter.

By Friday afternoon, officials said one fatality had been confirmed and that crews were continuing to search for the other missing person.

No information has been released about the kayakers, including where they're from.

Pictured Rocks, with its dramatic multicolored cliffs and unusual sandstone formations, is a popular tourist attraction for hikers, campers and sightseers on the Lake Superior shoreline.
