(WWJ) One of three men charged in the 2017 murder of Egypt Covington, a Van Buren Township woman slain in her own home, has pleaded guilty.

According to court records obtained by the Detroit News, Shane Evans of Wayne County's Sumpter Township entered a plea to a charge of second degree murder in Wayne County Circuit Court last Friday.

Evans, who was initially charged with felony murder and first degree home invasion for his alleged part in the killing, faces up to life in prison at at his sentencing.

Covington was found shot to death execution style in June of 2017 — just days before her 28th birthday — her hands bound with Christmas lights.

Covington’s boyfriend went to her house on Hull Road after getting worried when he didn't answer multiple phone calls. That's where he found her body.

After three years of investigation, calls for tips, questions and speculation, three arrests were made in late 2020 in the slaying that prosecutors have said appeared to be the result of a robbery gone wrong.

Covington worked as a singer and an account manager for a beer and wine distributor, and was well-known in metro Detroit for her beautiful singing voice and kind heart, according to her family.

Still set to face trial in this case are Timothy Moore and Shandon Groom, both of Toledo, Ohio. They are charged with first degree murder, which carries a sentence up mandatory life in prison without parole, along with felony murder, first degree home invasion and felony firearm.
