(WWJ) Three men have been ordered to stand trial for the murder of Egypt Covington, a Van Buren Township woman slain in her own home.

Covington was found shot to death execution style in June of 2017 — just days before her 28th birthday — her hands bound with Christmas lights.

Covington’s boyfriend went to her house after growing concerned when she didn't answer multiple phone calls. That's where he found her body.

After three years of investigation, calls for tips, questions and speculation, three arrests were made in the slaying that prosecutors now say appears to be the result of a robbery gone wrong.

MLive reports that defendant Shane Evans told police that his friends wanted to score some marijuana, so he told them about a friend who was a medical caregiver. But he said Timothy Moore and Shandon Groom entered the wrong unit in the duplex and killed Covington.

Evans, 31, of Sumpter Township, is charged with felony murder and first degree home invasion for his alleged part in the killing.

Moore, 34, of Toledo, Ohio, was charged with the same counts as Evans. and Groom, 28 — both of Toledo, Ohio — are charged with first degree murder, which carries a sentence up mandatory life in prison without parole, along with felony murder, first degree home invasion and felony firearm.

The trio is scheduled to appear in Third Circuit Court on April 1.

According to family and friends, Covington was well-known in metro Detroit for her beautiful singing voice and kind heart.

“Untimely death is always hard, but losing someone like Egypt is a true loss for the world. It shakes an entire community,” read a crowd-funding page for Covington's memorial. “Egypt was a bright, beautiful, amazing individual who touched every person she encountered. She will forever be missed.”
