(WWJ) A third person has been arrested and charged in the cold case murder of Egypt Covington, who was fatally shot in her Van Buren Township home.
Michigan State Police say 28-year-old Shandon Ray Groom of Toledo, Ohio was arrested last week in that city, just south of the Michigan border.
Covington died in 2017, just days before her 28th birthday.
Covington’s boyfriend went to her house after growing concerned when she did not answer multiple phone calls. That's where he found her dead.
In November, State Police announced that two arrests had been made, more than three years after Covington's murder.
On New Years Eve, MSP said Groom was arraigned in 34th District Court on charges of first degree home invasion and murder, and was remanded to jail without bond.
Also charged in the case are 34-year-old Timothy Moore of Toledo, and 31-year-old Shane Evans of Sumpter Township.
According to family and friends, Covington was well-known in metro Detroit for her beautiful singing voice and kind heart.
“Untimely death is always hard, but losing someone like Egypt is a true loss for the world. It shakes an entire community,” read a crowd-funding page for Covington's memorial. “Egypt was a bright, beautiful, amazing individual who touched every person she encountered. She will forever be missed.”
A hefty cash reward of $25,000 was offered earlier this year for information that would bring her killer to justice.
Police said Thursday that the investigation is ongoing.
