HAZEL PARK (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal two-car crash that happened early Tuesday morning and resulted in at least one death.

The crash happened on I-75 south at 8 Mile Road in Hazel Park at around 3 a.m.

According to the MSP, one driver hit the guardrail that separates I-75 from the 8 Mile exit ramp.

It is unclear what led to the driver losing control of his vehicle.

The driver reportedly got out of his car to assess the damage when the second vehicle failed to stop in time, crashing into the first vehicle as well as the driver standing outside, according to authorities.

The driver who was struck was pronounced dead at the scene, said officials.

Police said the two occupants in the second vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A witness stated that the second vehicle was traveling at a high speed prior to crashing into the first vehicle.

Both vehicles have severe front-end damage.

As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, I-75 south at 9 Mile Road was closed to investigate crash, but has since reopened.

A crash investigation is ongoing.
