DETROIT (WWJ) - Those venturing down into the city this weekend may have to plan alternative routes as construction will close a portion of I-94 in Detroit.
Officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) said crews will begin work to remove the Grand River overpass above I-94 starting Friday evening.
The demolition will begin, weather permitting, around 9 p.m. Friday, requiring the closure of I-95 in both directions between I-75 and I-96; the work is expected to wrap up by 5 a.m. Monday, April 11.
The highway closure could snare travel plans for Tigers games on Saturday and Sunday, as well as weekend festivities downtown. Authorities said westbound traffic from I-94 will be rerouted through southbound I-75 and westbound I-96 before rejoining with westbound I-94.
For those traveling east on I-94, expect to be detoured to I-96 east to I-75 north where drivers will connect back to EB I-94.
According to Channel 4, MDOT is set to close all entrance ramps to eastbound I-94 starting from 30th Street to M-10. the Lodge; entrance ramps from I-94 west will close from Mt. Elliott to Linwood streets.
Drivers should know that some closures will remain in effect after the Grand River Ave. bridge demolition is complete; MDOT said two sections of I-94 will stay closed through the end of May:
• The right lane of westbound I-94 from Linwood Street to I-96
• The westbound I-94 ramp to eastbound and westbound I-96.
Detours will be posted for local traffic
The Grand Rive Ave. bridge is part of a $3 billion project to reconstruct the I-94 freeway and replace 70 bridges. Officials for the I-94 Modernization Project said the new overpass, which will begin construction in the Fall of this year, will "provide broad mobility access for pedestrians, cyclists and motorized vehicles to meet the needs of residents and connect Detroit's many neighborhoods."
