Police: fire intentionally set before shooting at Shelby Twp. apartment complex

SHELBY TWP., Mich. (WWJ) -- Police in Shelby Township are searching for a suspect in a shooting at an apartment complex Saturday evening.

Authorities believe a fire was purposely set in the hallway outside of a second-story apartment at the Spring Hill Apartment complex, located at near Ryan and Utica Roads. Moments later, police say, gunshots rang out as people gathered outside the building.

Police received the 9-1-1 call shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, with a woman reporting that her apartment had been set on fire and a man had also been shot.

When officers arrived, they found the man inside the apartment with a gunshout wound to the back, and a second victim outside the building with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver of a silver sedan pass the apartment building and fire multiple shots at the crowd outside the apartment and a group of people on a second-story balcony.

Both victims were transported to Troy Beaumont Hospital, where the man is listed in critical condition and the woman in stable condition.

Police say the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction, driving the silver sedan, which had no license plate. The suspect is described as about 6-foot-1, 200 lbs., but authorities did not have a clothing description available.

Anyone who has information regarding the shooting or the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Shelby Township Police Department at 586 731-2121. Information can also be reported through the department’s Crimewatch page.
