3-year-old Roseville boy shoots, kills himself while playing with gun at home

The boyfriend of the child's mother is facing charges

(WWJ) A Roseville man is facing felony charges after a small boy found a gun, and shot and killed himself earlier this week.

Roseville Police said 29-year-old Chase Dersham left his gun unsecured inside the home in the 20000 block of 12 Mile Road on Wednesday evening, and the 3-year-old boy picked it up.

As the child was playing with the firearm in the basement, the gun went off, police said. He was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries

Dersham — who was living with his girlfriend, the victim's mother — is charged charged with manslaughter, a 15-year felony, and second degree child abuse, a 10-year felony.

He was arraigned in 39th District Court, given a $50,000 cash bond, and remains lodged in the Macomb County Jail.

"This is a very tragic incident that should have been avoided, if the weapon was properly secured," the Roseville PD said, in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to child’s family, friends and the first responders that responded to this tragedy."

Roseville detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting and more people may yet been charged in the case.

Please keep your guns locked up and out of the hands of children. The Roseville Police Department offers free gunlocks to the public. The gunlocks can be picked up from the Roseville Police Records Bureau, which is located inside the station at 29753 Gratiot Ave. Free gun locks are also offered by police to residents of the city of Detroit and other local communities. Check with your local precinct for availability.
