(WWJ) Michigan State Police are searching for the passenger of a car who ran off into the woods following a traffic stop in Inkster.

The incident began on Irene Street near Andover Road, just before 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Police said the driver of a 2016 Chevy did pull over, but sped off when troopers approached the car. The driver and passenger fled on foot a few blocks south of the incident.

The driver, who is currently on tether for carrying a concealed weapon and was in possession of a stolen 40-caliber pistol with an extended magazine, was caught and taken into custody. His name was not immediately released.

The passenger was spotted by police running from behind a house and into a wooded area. The MSP Canine unit tracked to a black duffle bag with a loaded AK Pistol and a fully loaded magazine, police said, but there was no sign of the suspect.

The investigation is ongoing.
